It's All About PR

A Blog From A PR Student

Attention Grabbing Headlines!!!

Lately I have been reading a lot and I have noticed that I have a very narrow attention span. In order for me to read something, I have to be interested by the headline of the article, otherwise I will never see it. I know that this also applies to the majority of the world. Now, here is the question… Will it Blend? This is an amazing campaign that came out of Blendtec. Not only does this slogan really get you interested, but it makes you really want to know if “it will blend!” Now, the majority of this campaign was not in print ads, but in commercials. However, I actually saw one of the print ads for it and that is what got me interested in the campaign. How will you grab attention to your message?

I’m Back!

Well, It has been a while since I have done anything with my blog. I originally, created this blog for a class in my junior year of college. After the class was over, I stopped keeping up with the blog, but recently I have found many reasons to come back to it.

Also, I am looking to continue this blog in an attempt to keep up with the crazy world of PR! After I graduate, I will not have as many resources to keep up with the industry. This is my creative attempt to keep up on my own!

PR Connections #10: Animal Abuse

When I first read this article, I was very sad to see the facts behind animal abuse. It is so horrible to know that animals are being abused and killed everyday. However, I think it is good that there are facts out about animal abuse so that people are not ignorant to the subject and hopefully something can be done. It really makes me mad when I hear about animals getting abused because they were not put here to be abused. Animals are living creatures and just because they are not humans does not mean that their lives aren’t important. I love animals and cannot even think about how people abuse animals. Something has to be done because we can’t just keep letting this happen.

PR Connection #9: A toddler smoking!

When I first read this article, I was completely stunned. I cannot believe that this poor 2 year old child is smoking cigarettes and his father allows it. His father buys him cigarettes and brags about how much his 2 year old can smoke. This is horrible and I hope his mother is able to get help for him because at this rate, he is on his way to a life of serious health problems. Also, I understand that cultures differ in different regions around the world, but I do not think it is ever acceptable to let babies smoke! I mean, why would anyone think that this is okay? This guy should really get nominated for Dad of the Year.

PR Connection #8: Kobe Sucks!

From the perspective of being in the heat of the game, I understand getting upset and saying things that you might not normally say. However, this is a little ridiculous. Kobe Bryant called a referee a F***** faggot. As if there was not enough stuff bringing down his image already… I have to say that I am very upset that he did not get in more trouble than he did. He needs to understand that he is in the eye of the public and he should keep his opinion to himself. I wonder how he would feel if someone were to ever say a racial slur about him? He would probably take it personal. Well, it is the same thing when he calls someone a faggot. He should really think about what he says before he says it!

PR Connection#7: Toyota Crisis

When a business takes action to recall a product, they must have an effective way to respond to all of the comments and things to defend their reputation. This is something that should be done immediately after the situation occurs. In fact, I think that the company should jump at the first chance to apologize for any inconvenience and explain the situation. That was not the case with Toyota. Although Toyota has done a very good job of handling their recall as of late, when it initially happened they did not say anything. Toyota is a company that was known for their quality and when this happened, it just destroyed their image. It could have been a little bit easier for them if they had a plan that was more effective.

PR Connections #6: Nestle’s PR Crisis

So this is a perfect example of what not to do in a PR crisis. Nestle was accused of purchasing Palm oil from suppliers who are destroying the Indonesian Rain forest. This is obviously a hot button issue for many people and of course consumers let Nestle know how they felt about the situation. Well, a lot of people just flooded Nestle’s Facebook page and left really opinionated comments. People even went as far as to retort the image of Nestle’s logo and use it as their default. Well, this did not go over well with Nestle and they responded by telling their consumers that they were wrong for doing this. That was a dumb move on Nestle’s part. In fact, all of this could have been avoided if Nestle had a crisis plan and acted quickly in response to the initial comments made about them.

This is a post from Michaela about Limewire getting shut down. I can’t believe it took this long for it to happen, but here is the original post for you to get the details:

LimeWire, a free peer-to-peer file sharing client program, is finally shut down. After years of illegal downloads by millions of people, and profit loss the government on October 26, 2010, has finally grew some balls and stopped it all together thanks

toJudge Kimba Wood. Yes, was guilty of downloading illegal music on to my computer, and yes it was very easy and very CHEAP, but I also have my favorite bands who I love to contribute and make them money by buying their albums and merchandise. In a way it is very annoying to have to buy every song you want off of iTunes , but I like it now because now all the bands and singers that you all love are making money for the music we love to hear because it magically makes you feel much better.

Now that LimWire is gone, the government needs to shut down all the sites that have just took LimWires position. Examples are Frostwire, Bearshare, music frost, and music oasis. (END POST)

I think that this was just so crazy because Limewire was around forever  and always had illegal downloads. I mean, I am in no way trying to say that I think it was okay to download stuff illegally, but I have to wonder why it took so long? It was like everyone knew about it and just didn’t care.

In any case, I think that even though Limewire is gone, people will still find ways to download stuff illegally. Its almost inevitable because no one is going to pay for music if they can find it for free.

This is a post that I found very interesting. It is by Nicole Long and it talks about the earthqauke that hit Japan. She made this a very easy read and was able to appeal to the emotions by describing “The Horror In Japan.” (Click this link to see the original post with images.)

Here is the blog post:

An 8.9-magnitude earthquake hit northern Japan today, triggering tsunamis that sent a wave filled with boats and houses toward land. Hawaii and the U.S. West Coast are under a tsunami warning.

The quake hit about 80 miles off the coast of Japan’s most populous island. The wave carries everything in its path inland and people turn to an airport for dry land and wait for rescue.

At an oil refinery near the coast, flames abrupt out of control triggered from the quake.

People in Tokyo, 230 miles away from the quake even felt aftershock. Train stations shut down, while people panicked.

Although quakes are common in Japan, people who live in Japan say this quake is unlike any other they have felt before. Japan quake witness Matt Alt said “My wife and I stood outside and, basically we held on to the outside of our house, you couldn’t even stand up. We have never, ever felt anything on the magnitude, the literal magnitude, of what we experienced today.”

This is one of the most powerful earthquakes in the past 100 years. It is sending aftershock into many other areas and tsunami wave warnings along the Pacific, including Hawaii. At least 137 people were killed, 539 were injured and 351 were missing after the 8.9-magnitude earthquake that hit Japan on Friday, according to the Kyodo News Agency, citing police.

[11:07 a.m. ET, 1:07 a.m. Tokyo] Additionally, between 200 and 300 bodies have been found in the coastal city of Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture following the subsequent tsunami that struck that area. The death toll is likely to rise as there are few casualty counts yet from the worst-hit areas.

[12:06 p.m. ET, 2:06 a.m. Tokyo] Radiation level rising in Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant turbine building, Kyodo News Agency reports.

Today [12:20 p.m. ET, 2:20 a.m. Tokyo] Maui police have reports of a 9-foot wave hitting Lahaina Harbor, Maui County Civil Defense Agency reports.

With all the tragedy happening, it is very important that we keep an eye on the news to one let us know if we may be in danger and two see if there is anyway we can help the victims of this. My thoughts and prayers are with the people who have lost loved ones due to this quake.

TOW#13: Viral Videos

Although there are many videos that I have found throughout the years that I have thought of as funny, or sad, or anything that appeals to me, I have always wondered what makes them so popular???

What I have recently realized is that these videos go viral because of there universal appeal. Most of the time, if a video goes viral and it is funny, it is funny to everyone. The same applies if it is a sad video, or an angry video. It makes people feel the same emotion and it takes over.

When I watched David After Dentist, I thought it was super funny. That kid is so messed up. I think that video got so popular not only because it is funny, but also because everyone knows what he is going through. Everyone has been to the dentist and everyone has been drugged.

There are some other videos that I think are hilarious that you might enjoy as well.

I love this video and the story behind it is so funny. This girl is just messing around taking a stupid video on her moms phone. Well, she forgot to delete it and her brother got a hold of it. Recently before this, she posted some pretty embarrassing stuff on his facebook and this was the ultimate revenge.

Here is another video that I really like.

I think this video is so funny. I mean, I have never seen anything like it. I do not know why, but this girl singing a dumb song about chapstick is just so funny. I think it must be the sound effects that she makes.

Viral videos are really great if used correctly. Here is an example of a viral video that really hurt a business.

This video was really damaging to United Airlines because it showed that they did not care for their customers luggage. This video was made because this band was traveling via United and they witnessed some of the crew throwing their instruments. The instruments were damaged and United refused to take responsibility for over a year. This was the result and it really hurt their image.

But to end on a good note, here is a very cute viral video and it is hilarious…
